We weren’t exactly mapping the city,

but there was an unsaid sense of testing

its possibilities – or of saying a drawn out goodbye.

I can’t recall ever being watched from afar

or engaged in idle chatter by strangers

with thick accents, schooled in charm;

though I’d have thought (mistakenly)

our destinations would hold their interest.

Even then, it’s said, they could drive a tank

straight to my door. Like a homing dog,

it speeds along Carrington Road, straight up

the Avenue. Ivan knows his route will work;

after all, someone on the ground’s measured

the bridges, noted the camber of all the main roads.

He’s guided by what’s colour-coded: a sharp-edged

black for industrial plants, purple – admin;

for the military, a fatigued combat green.
